Thoughts, Interests and Activities:
I love language - that of daily conversation, of poetry, of wisdom, of politics, of the foreign tongue as well as the changing nature of my own. I find joy in my garden - in dividing and moving plants in the hope they will thrive when they are in the right place. My children and grandchildren bring me laughter and contentment. The adult learners with whom, as a volunteer ESL tutor, I explore my own language, bring meaning and understanding to my life. Who would have known I would become a puppetteer in my 70s?

The problem, often not discovered until late in life, is that when you look for things in life like love, meaning, motivation, it implies they are sitting behind a tree or under a rock. The most successful people in life recognize, that in life they create their own love, they manufacture their own meaning, they generate their own motivation. For me, I am driven by two main philosophies, know more today about the world than I knew yesterday. And lessen the suffering of others. You'd be surprised how far that gets you.

It's all sorts of dead ideas, and lifeless old beliefs, and so forth. They have no vitality, but they cling to us all the same, and we can't get rid of them. Whenever I take up a newspaper, I seem to see Ghosts gliding between the lines. There must be Ghosts all the country over, as thick as the sand of the sea. And then we are, one and all, so pitifully afraid of the light.

Wars damage the civilian society as much as they damage the enemy. Soldiers never get over it.

But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings -- that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide.
