Acceptance

Acceptance means not wishing for something to be what it is not. When we accept what is before us, we are able to embrace whatever positive feelings and experiences may be possible in the situation. Acceptance must be guided by discernment – learning how to tell the difference between what we can change and what we cannot. Acceptance offers us the opportunity to sort what is important from what is not with grace and kindness; to put patience with self, people, and circumstances, before criticism and manipulation. When we practice acceptance we also practice tolerance, competence, humor, and love. Acceptance is the best path to change because it nurtures within us understanding, confidence, and wisdom. Related virtues: peacefulness, forgiveness.
When you see a straight piece of wood, you do not want to make it into a wheel.

I describe family values as responsibility towards others, increase of tolerance, compromise, support, flexibility. And essentially the things I call the silent song of life—the continuous process of mutual accommodation without which life is impossible.

To enjoy anything, we cannot be attached to it.  What we usually try to do is capture any joy that comes our way before it can escape.  We try to cling to pleasure, but all we succeed in doing is making ourselves frustrated because, whatever it promises, pleasure simply cannot last.  But if I am willing to kiss the joy as it flies, I say, 'Yes, this moment is beautiful.  I won't grab it.  I'll let it go.'

When you become detached mentally from yourself and concentrate on helping other people with their difficulties, you will be able to cope with your own more effectively. Somehow, the act of self-giving is a personal power-releasing factor.

Acceptance is not a state of passivity or inaction.  I'm not saying you can't change the world, right wrongs or replace evil with good.  Acceptance is, in fact, the first step to successful action.  If you don't fully accept a situation precisely the way it is, you will have difficulty changing it.  Moreover, if you don't fully accept the situation, you will never really know if the situation should be changed.

Living apart and at peace with myself; I came to realize more vividly the meaning of the doctrine of acceptance.  To refrain from giving advice, to refrain from meddling in the affairs of others, to refrain, even though the motives be the highest, from tampering with another's way of life.  So simple, yet so difficult for an active spirit.

One of the biggest obstacles to people improving their self-esteem is their constant need for approval by others. The problem with this is that until you believe in yourself, it will never matter what someone else says because the most important person doesn't believe it, You.

A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.
