Rationality
Rationality is holding ourselves accountable to the bounds of logic and evidence, even when it is uncomfortable to do so. When we are rational, we work to avoid our natural biases, like listening only to evidence that supports our point of view or selfish interests. Instead, we earnestly seek to follow reasoning and evidence where they lead, knowing that we will often fail but also knowing that our higher intelligence is one of our greatest gifts. When we are rational we recognize that intuition, emotion and thoughtful analysis in combination are stronger than any one of the three. Together they help us to discern what is right, what is real, and what is important. We strive to use all three in the service of our life mission. An important part of rationality is humility – the recognition that no matter how rational we try to be, at times we will be blind to our own limitations. We welcome community with others who can help us to see our blind spots and help us to grow.
