Optimism

previous next

Optimism is an attitude that keeps us centered on what is good about our present situation or about the future. Everything that is lovely or delightful in this world exists alongside pain and loss; optimism is a conscious selective focus on the good.

Optimism gives us energy; it makes our efforts feel worthwhile. In the end it is rewarded because even though some of these efforts will fail, others will succeed, and we can’t know ahead of time which are which. When we are optimistic we are happier and better company—we help other people to be happy and hopeful, too.

The world is moving so fast these days that the man who says it can't be done is generally interrupted by someone doing it.

The optimist sees the rose and not its thorns; the pessimist stares at the thorns, oblivious of the rose.

Life is an opportunity to make the best of things when we cannot better them. It is rarely so bad that this best amounts to nothing good. It is usually worth living, though its value is often concealed by pain and strain, during a search for meaning that resembles a treasure hunt.

An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered.

It is better to fail at doing something, than to succeed in doing nothing.

We have to cover everything with the Lord himself, not a false sort of optimism, not by blinding our eyes to the evil, but by really seeing God in everything.

Come, Whoever you are! Wanderer, worshipper, lover of leaving, Come. Ours is not a caravan of despair. It doesn’t matter if you’ve broken your vow a thousand times, Still come. And yet again, come!

Life, when fully lived under a variety of cultural conditions, can be euphoric and optimistic; it can be a joy to experience and a wonder to behold.

I believe in humanity. We are an incredible species. We're still just a child creature, we're still being nasty to each other. And all children go through those phases. We're growing up, we're moving into adolescence now. When we grow up - man, we're going to be something!
