Acceptance - Growth
On Recovery from Fundamentalism
For the rest of my life,
I will chance across pieces of fundamentalism
that are still embedded in my psyche –
fragments of shrapnel from a deep early wound,
working their way to the surface.

I too was deeply wounded early . . . in a similar fundamentalist blast Valerie, but in carefully studying and feeling every single individual shrapnel fragment that comes to the surface, I feel we ever more clearly come to understand the cause, enabling us to take one more small step on the long road to recovery. In their way, might not such lifelong journeys into the psyche potentially be as valuable to the future of humanity as the heroic journeys of human discovery across the worlds continents, oceans and into space? For surely we must try and fully understand how and why the psyche is damaged by exposure to influences such as fundamentalism, and how to avoid this damage occurring to those of future generations. In a very real sense such journeys may I suggest be every bit as hazardous, as it would seem Friedrich Nietzsche found. I have found encouragement in some of the words of this heroic pioneer, 'And so onwards along the path of wisdom . . .' and particularly, 'You have it within your power to merge everything you have lived through . . .' in 'Human, All Too Human - A Book for Free Spirits', 1878, Section Five, Signs of Higher and Lower Culture, No.292, page 174 in Google Books at http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=_GLTsGHUxDgC&pg=PA174&lpg=PA174&dq=%22and+so+onwards+along+the+paths+of+wisdom+with+a+hearty+tread&source=bl&ots=peFsSRcs3o&sig=dOMa6GimLqC9NUe83HfttbfuD2Y&hl=en&ei=r36GS-f6M4Pw0wSSk5XFCw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CAsQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=and%20so%20onwards%20along%20the%20path%20of%20wisdom&f=fals The road to psyche shrapnel wound recovery is painful, hard and long. Thanks for keeping faith Valerie, 'You have it within your power . . .' NeilH
